All about us!

Steve, original founder of The Trekking Company, delivers..

TrekCo was started in 1989, the first trip being a walking holiday in the Yorkshire Dales - from there we have gone on to organise walks, camps, expeditions and training courses across the UK, in the Alps and in the USA and Himalayas.

Our office is in Sussex close to a lot of our clients and our South Downs walking, but we have strong connections with the Peak District, the Lake District, the French Alps and Nepal. TrekCo staff are renowned for being friendly and relaxed in their approach, and we’ll always make sure our clients and their comfort are at the absolute centre of what we do.

TrekCo was started by Steve Ranger in 1989 and joined by Paul Morley a couple of years later. We have run adventure weekends, school camps, staff training in Utah and California, abseiling events, day walks - you name it.

The Nepali Connection

Since 2000, TrekCo have had a strong connection with Nepal and in particular with our friends Climb High Himalaya. Climb High are what’s known in Nepal as a ‘Trekking Agency’, a company who organise logistics for treks and expeditions. So if you go on an expedition with a UK company, someone like Climb High provide all the porters who carry your bags, put up the tents and cook the food - as well as booking local flights and hotels, meeting you at the airport and taking you sightseeing. In fact, everything the UK company do - they just pay us to do it!

Climb High employ about 240 people in a season, many of whom rely of portering work to see them and their families through for the rest of the year. A typical porter may walk weeks from his or her (usually his, but women are starting to be more accepted at work in this very traditional country) farm just for a 3 week trek, twice a year. That is enough to supplement the farm income for the rest of the year.

TrekCo support Climb High financially in order to keep those locals in employment.

At TrekCo we believe that you can be professional as an outdoor instructor without having ‘instructoritis’ - that affliction which gives you a bossy voice and strange way of talking. We’re all outdoor professionals but we have lives, and love making friends and introducing people to great experiences. It’s the satisfaction of new experiences and getting to know people that we’re looking for.
