Students undertaking the Mountain Activities course for GCSE PE took part in a mock mountain rescue yesterday on the moors of the Peak District. TrekCo instructors co-ordinated two teams who searched for and rescued two casualties lying injured on the edge of woodland.
Students grew visibly in confidence during the exercise, which followed two days of navigation and ropework in very cold conditions. Taking part in a four day residential where they are also learning rock climbing and undertaking the relevant challenges, these students from the urban south adapted admirably to conditions and thoroughly enjoyed their GCSE. This is undoubtedly a great way for PE departments to fulfil their GCSE PE needs and gain some good grades in outdoor activities.
